Today, I believe God must smile on how this church is now used. Since its closing (and the closing of nearby St. Gerard’s Church), the Bailey/Kensington food bank is housed in St. James. As one who grew up in this parish and attended countless liturgies, it struck me how appropriate it is that this holy ground is now used to help feed a local community marked by extreme poverty. The place where we put the food bags together before distributing them to the people, is the same spot where the Mass collection money used to be counted by the church ushers. The idea of serving God’s people has come full circle and it seems the absolute right thing to be doing!

Plan A was to build a church on top of the “basement”. The funds were never available so it was forever known as the only church in the diocese where one had to walk DOWN the stairs to enter it.
