Waldmünchen is in the District of Cham, the Oberpfalz Region, in the German state of Bavaria. Located on the Czech border, travel was restricted for years with the existence of the Iron Curtain. However, with its fall in 1990, the border is once again open.

The town of Waldmünchen is comprised of 15 districts: Albernhof, Ast, Geigant, Herzogau, Hocha, Höll, Katzbach, Prosdorf, Rannersdorf, Schäferei, Sinzendorf, Spielberg, Ulrichsgrün, Untergrafenried, and Waldmünchen. Ana and George Ruhland, and most of their ancestors for 2 or 3 more generations came from these villages.

Today Waldmünchen has a population of about 7000, but in 1867, the town of Waldmünchen had 2557 residents and 548 buildings. There were 4 churches, 1 school, 1 court office, 1 district office, 1 tax office, 1 forestry office, 1 notary, 1 border custom’s office, 1 post office, a castle (“Schlossberg”), and a military battalion. Today the castle is a learning institution.

Here are a couple of YouTube videos about Waldmünchen.

The first is from Waldmünchen’s annual festival, “Trenck der Pandur”. Colonel Franz von der Trenck conquered in 1742 the town. He led a group of mercenaries (panduren) through Waldmunchen and wreaked havoc. His soldiers an outlaw bunch comprised of murderers, thieves, etc. Colonel Trenck loved the empress, as well as many other women. ‘Nuff said. You get the picture.

It’s from stadt waldmünchen:

This one is a tourist video of the area; it’s from Waldmünchner Urlaubsland. I leave it to Greg to translate for us, but even without a translation, you can gather the meaning. It has lots to offer the adventure, sports, and health conscious tourist. Cousins, when are we going????
