KIEBER REUNION 1942, transcribed by carolyn, written by Irene K. Hirsch
The annual Kieber Reunion was held July 1942 at Island Park, Williamsville, NY. In charge of Fred Kieber and family. This was the fourth successive year the reunion was held at Island Park. Because of the war, a mere forty-three of the prominent were present.
When everyone entered the park, the men sat down to gab, while the women piled the tables full of delicious foods. Everyone was in good humor and started games soon after eating.
After a period of swimming, pitching horseshoes, and a game of baseball, games were played and prizes won by the best contestants. Everyone participated and did their best to win. Carl Kieber won the prize for having the greatest speed in racing for a sucker. Soon after Shirley Hirsch won the same race for the older group because of her long legs. Bill Abbott and Gordon Leib won the three legged race after much tripping and tumbling. A prize was awarded to Lilian Leib after proving she had the most hot air for blowing up a balloon. Ben Kieber, after much huffing and puffing on his pipe, won the tobacco race, very much exhausted when he reached the goal line. Mary Perkins won the prize for pinning clothespins on the line, for two consecutive years, so no one accused her of cheating.
Soon everyone was hungry and another delicious meal was served. After supper, one family after another packed up to go home so it was decided that Lena and Martin Kieber would be in charge of the reunion the following year.
